Postby Mackbighorn » Wed Jun 01, 2016 9:19 am

HI guys,
Looking at having my engine redone as per the advert here.
accessories/isuzu/auction-1094044749.htm

Curious to see if anyone on the forum has used isuzu parts and service in Auckland?

Cheers
Mack

They are one of the 2 main wreckers for Isuzu parts. I have bought minor patrts from them no issue

Curious as that price to recondition the motor is around half of my other quotes.

Considering the new head for my wizard cost 1600 its a cheap price. However reading between the lines you get new liners and rings but keep your pistons you get new big end bearings but no mention of mains crank or oil pump. If these parts are needed you are pretty much stuck with a dismantalled engine and their costings for the other parts so read the fine print
Whats wrong with your engine? What age and mileage?

Allegedly 230k, have been told best case scenario liners are buggered, 1997.
Supposedly had new liners a year ago before I bought it. Maybe it did but whoever put them in didn't know what they were doing

They dont normally rebuild the engine they refurbish it, which is just fix whats broken and reuse all the parts they can, i saw them do liners without removing the engine

Does it work ok? ..I'm a little cautious as I'm not certain it wasn't them who did this same engine a year or so back

My comment read the fine print obviously stands. I would worry about a 230km engine that has already had a rebuild and needs doing again. Either the mileage is wrong or the maintenance wasnt up to spec so what other damage wasnt fixed

I know the parts were bought from isuzu parts and service and I can see a charge for taking the motor out . But there doesn't seem to be a labour charge except around 600 for taking the motor out.

I did a 3.1 engine with all genuine parts and it came to 18grand, only resued bits were inlet/exhaust manifolds, and covers, block, crank and conrods, 2.8 was 6.5k my mate got it done 20,000km ago from engine rebuilder in taupo, you get what you pay for with engines

reality is that most people wont pay that for an engine in a 20 year old truck. The rest of the vehicle doesnt justify it. You can get rebuild kits for $1200 but often they have cast iron liners rather than chrome. If the liners have been changed make sure the rings are of the opposite metal as having them the same causes extreme wear

the main thing is that everyone changes the liners but the blocks distort and get out of round where the liners go and need boring and oversize liners fitted, if fitting new liners to a flogged block you havnt fixed it, it will just damage the liner again, they are a complex engine, for an old diesel

I am at a loss to understand why cast iron does not make a good liner (if indeed it doesn't?), I have rebuilt alloy engine with steel liners and cast iron rings and not long after it started smoking (to be fair I didn't follow the break in procedure).
Are chrome liners superior to cast iron?.

Hardly anyone uses chrome bores except high performance engines and Isuzu diesels. The one problem with the steel liners on Isuzus is that they are the cheap option and some have questionably quality. Nissan engines are steel liners and last just as long as our chrome engines.
You can hone a steel bore which does mean that minor bore warping can be taken care of where a wraped block and chrome liners pretty much is going to cause trouble.
Big thing is that the bore and ring must be different material.
