Timing belts are a peice of piss on these, if you have a little mechanical knowledge you can do it yourself, there are basic walk-throus on this and the old forum.

When talking to mechancis you have to forget it's an MU and tell them it's a Jackaroo, cause all they are trying to do is rip you off and if you still not getting any sense out of them try some one else.

The short wheel-base is awesome - I don't know what people are complaining about. Try a SWB 70 series Landcruiser for shocking on-road manners. My Isuzu wipes the floor with Cruisers on and off road.

Great engines - apart from smoke clouds the day after a long run.

Good looks - girls love them and personally I think they are a damned good looking vehicle.

Strong drivetrain - no aluminium front diff housings here, sonny. Mine went from Dunedin to Nelson in 4-Hi and only scuffed up the front tyres. No - it wasn't me, it was the last owner.

Sensible and thoughtful engineering.

I'd buy another one immediately and yes, I know it was only supposed to be one thing.

Talking about alloy diffs you dont bend the isuzu suspension every time you hit a little pothole which is quite unlike the highly popular small 4wd you refer to. (we shouldnt bag other 4wds with a z in there name should we)

There are enough differences to make this a hard question. The 92 onwards bighorn is longer than the mu and has longer a arms and coils on the rear so articulates better
The earlier bighorn is shorter than the mu so is better in a ramp over situation.
The Mu has a lower center of gravity so less likly to roll

hummmm ive got a plan im tinking of trying now let me know if you think it will work well.

my plan is to fit the later 92 onwards bighorn front suspension arm's the longer ones! to a ubs55 bighorn to give the front more travel. and for the back ill use the diff and coil spring set up outta the later bighorn to as i can just cut the mounts of the later model chassis and weld em to my early bighorn chassis.

oh and welding and cert is not a problem as im a ticked welder, and have a verry good m8 who is a certifer.

let me know if any of you think it will work well.

Your not the first to come up with this idea. The front suspesion bits just about bolt up no issue but you cant fit the half shafts as the diff housings are a different length and the chassis width is different and there is no viable mix and match. You aint allowed to weld forged parts like half shafts. (almost true as they can be xrayed if you can afford this)
Rear end is probably doable but once again the chassis width will make things hard. Happy measureing
