UHF in NZ

Postby iananita » Tue Sep 29, 2009 3:21 pm

What is the legal wattage limit for UHF units in NZ?

In Aussie, we can have upto 5W units without license.

Some truck companies have 25W units which I would like to get hold of.

For uhf prs.
http://www.rsm.govt.nz/cms/licensing/ty ... band-radio
Near the bottom of this document it says for NZ 5w max.
In NZ there is no point going higher as it still relies on line of site so anything beyond the 15k range quoted on the 5 watt unit is rarely achievable. Ive failed to get 200 meters between car mounted 5 watt sets in bush but have spoken between 2 half watt hand helds at 15km in perfect conditions. More power does not help
For the older vhf cb 25 watts was allowed as is most vhf and hf radio gear although you need a licence to use anything other than cb and prs

Cb is only allowed 4 watts and 12 on sideband.

I use to run a 50 watt inline linear amp when we had access to sugarloaf here in ch ch and got some amazing skip!

But thats blocked off now and the 50watter is tucked away safe and sound for now.

Just looked through there website. They do some nice stuff but most of it requires a licence so the rules are different. The powers listed above are for the public frequencies.

One of the 4wd clubs Im in has got its own bulk licence for VHF Eband radios. These radios are 25w for the vehicle mount. The best point to point Ive heard so far was from the eastern Hut hills in Wellington to behind Taihape also on the high country. They are not bad in the bush either

What frequencies are vhf and hf? I am interested in getting a mountain radio. (hf?) I can hear the montain radio people in the south island at 7:00pm most nights on my scanner but the lcd is broken so I dont know what frequencies i am scanning these days.

The places I go to in the summer months has no cell coverage so I thought that would be good to have for safety sake.

Appears same regulation, upto 5W for uhf units without license.

Need a second-hand 25W unit from truckie.
