TF Oil filter housing swap 97+ Into 96 for 3" dump???

Postby Gemgem » Sun Mar 09, 2014 5:53 pm

Gday everyone. Im new to this forum having judt got myself a 96 tf rodeo 2.8 4jb1t. Couldnt be happier! Real solid workhorse these things are.

Anyways, i have been looking around through old topics and there's a wealth of info to get started on modding it for the tracks and touring.

First things first is to do something about that disastrous turbo lag so looking at 2.5-3" exhaust from turbo back. Now, being the earlier pre 1997 TF rodeo it has the upward facing oil filter which is in the way. I understand this can be swapped with that from the 4jg2t 3.1td jackaroo motor. Is it possible also to swap with one from later 1998+ rodeos with downard 45 deg facing filter assembly? Much more common where i am.

Cheers!

yes either of them will fit, you will have to change the coolant lines aswell to the oil cooler

Most good exhaust shops will be able to make one. Make sure you let them know you need to get to the oil filter.

Thanks for the info! Given the option of a late model 4jb1t filter housing or 4jg2t housing what would work better for fitting larger dump pipe and easier for modifying oil/ coolant lines etc?

later 4jb1 housing is better as the oil filter is smaller, other than that they are the same to fit

Just a little update. I took my rig to an exhaust specialist and he said he's custom made a few dump pipes for the same setup so no need to change oil filter housing. I tjink filter will only be changeable from the top but thats how i do it anyway
