how many reasons can you think of for removing a sump?

Postby geeves » Tue Aug 26, 2014 2:42 pm

A puzzle with only piece of mind at the end.
While fitting the old sump guard (which is another story in itself) I noticed silicone globs all round the sump. Im just wondering what work may of been done on this engine. Its not clean enough to have been fully stripped or at least recently but it runs well with no crankcase fumes at all which is pretty good for 220k plus or minus any jap import adjustment.
Ive no interest in taking the sump off just to find out

Just the tin part? Or the entire bottom end sump?
Tin part probably as simple as a stuck sump plug or similar so being taken out to drill out, or maybe leaking.
Entire bottom end sump - Previous owner could have removed for inspection, oil pickup as mentioned above, or i've heard of people who replace bottom end bearing caps every 100k as preventative maintenance.

Only noticed the lower section but will check closer on the weekend. Everything about the vehicle suggests a person that cared for his vehicle until he snuffed it 2 years ago where the history gets hazy. It didnt have a wof inspection for 2 years by the looks of it but did 25000km in that time The only obvious work done recently is a replacement power steer hose because the old one blew but nothing was done to replace the worn out o ring at the same time so it continued to dribble over the front of the engine. The fan belts were new but the alternator belt was the wrong one (too long) The turbo isnt old and even diff breathers have been extended.

Maybe someone did the cam belt and lost the correct pulley bolt. So they used a Toyota one which jammed. So when next the belt was done the bolt snapped and it proved impossible to remove the remains, so he had to pull the engine out and remove the crank to drill the bolt out? Hence the goo around the sump.
Who would do such a thing?

I would wonder how one knew it could happen    :o

Actually the bolt did fall out of my 4jb1 and was lost but a genuine one was put in its place and in any case your not meant to be messing with that big bolt
