Turbo died 3.1 TD What turbo to get? Cheap chinese good/bad?

Postby konni » Thu Nov 20, 2014 4:41 pm

Hey!
My turbo made some awfull sounds, both high pitch and like if the wings hit the inside of the casing.
Then it stopped working... No oil leaks tho! I've driven about 1'000 km with no turbo and only minimal oil loss. lucky i guess.

So i wounder if those cheaper Ebay turbos are any good? They cost about 250 Euro.. And the ones of local car scrap yars will cost almost the same.
So maybe you guys have some experience, and know about some place where they sell "good" quality turbos.
I heard there are some terrible ones thar might fail after a week and some that will run for a long time.

There are about 20 places in china making turbos that sell them to 200 dealers who all buy from all manufacturers then sell under there own brand name. Just because one is very good (some at least as good as genuine) it doesnt always mean the next one will be
250E is a very good price I paid a little over double that for a genuine IHI. It could be worth taking the risk but there is no way we can advise on the cheapys

Yup, i clearly see that its hard to find the good ones in that case :)
Some sellers offer a 3 year waranty!
I figure i pick one of those and hope for the best..

I could buy a used one for the same price, but it will be used as i said, feels just as unsafe as the china option.

I'll look for some info for a few more days and then probably order a cheap one.

Thank you for the tips!

Make sure you get the right turbo for intercooled or no intercooled engine they are both different set up.

good point match the numbers. It is possible to rotate the inlet if you are careful but one hole does not line up. You can run a non standard pipe for the intercooled turbo on a non intercooled engine but I doubt there is room to do the oposite

That's right geeves but you can drill and tap the housing for that bolt after rotating it but a bitch of a job to do I still have the scars on my hands from doing it as well still on the motor highly recommended doing it with turbo off the engine rotating the turbo to fit the intercooler.

Yes! Thanks a lot for that, i had no idea there was 3.1 engines with no intercooler.. Then again, this is my first isuzu! But not my last, if i ever need another one that is, i think this one will run forever.
It even runs great without the turbo, still. I shouldn't drive to much as i fear it might break even more and leak out all oil.. So far it leaks no oil at all tho.

I can't see if the auctions are for the intercooled engine or not.. But its easy to compare the part numbers, like for this one as an example, they have listed all compatible part numbers.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/for-Isuzu-Troop ... 8f&vxp=mtr

I'll order as soon as i have a day off to check the part number on my turbo and when i can afford to be without wheels for a day.

Hello again!

More problems.. maybe.

My part number on my Turbo is 89 70863433
The closest number on any ebay turbo is 89 70863431
Its the same except the last number!

You guys think it will still fit? Its the same year/modell/engine etc as specified.. Weird.

And i just found one turbo with a matching number...
Sorry :P

Seems as there are several turbos for this engine after all?
Or perhaps theres only small differences that don't matter.. I have no idea so i better check the numbers.
