4JX1 to 4JB1 Jackaroo/Bighorn/Trooper conversion

Postby jackdriver » Sun Apr 29, 2012 8:53 pm

Around 12 months ago I bought a 2000 Jackaroo (Bighorn, Trooper) with 4JX1 3.0 diesel. The engine had typical issues and with some help from this forum I ended up fitting a 4JB1 2.8 turbo diesel engine.
I have now documented the job and am making it available to anyone else who has found themselves in hot water with a Jack/Bighorn/Trooper and needs to ressurrect it. Send me a message and I'll arrange to send it to you in PDF form.

Thank you for the copy. But just want to know...Between a 4JG2 Isuzu engine and a 4JB1 one, which can be easily swapped in a 4x4 Isuzu Wizard 4JX1 turbodiesel with manual transmission ?

4jg2 or 4jb1 are going to be the same amount of work have to change g-box aswell as bellhousing is different

I'd really appreciate a copy of this too please! My email is blairhansen@yahoo.com. I've just picked up a 1998 bighorn plaiser (with the recaro interior etc) that won't start (got it really cheap because of it!) and I am going to put my spare 4JG2 in and convert it to manual at the same time... Glutton for punishment but it should be a nice truck when it's done.

Hey Guys.
I used this download to do my JX1 to JB1 conversion.
First up its good basic info and many thanks to Jackdriver for sharing it.
How ever ,there are a few things I did as per the down load that I wouldnt do if I were doin it again.
1.Forget the M16 bolts, taps, drill bits and drilling of the two top and two bottom holes in the bell housing.the existing bolts are fine.just watch the length when you reassemble.
2.Use M12 countersunk hex drive head bolts to secure the metal gasket and the alloy JB1 spacer plate to the engine. BEFORE YOU DO THIS,when you countersink go easy, not too deep or you'll weaken the spacer. You'll need to make the gasket from sheet metal in the shape of the JX1 spacer cause there's a gap tween the engine and the bell housing at the bottom and a space on the turbo side.If you dont sort it you'll end up with a clutch full of water at the first wet day!!.DONT USE ANYTHING GREATER THAN 2MM THICKNESS,cause if you do you wont get clearance on a dual mass flywheel.
3.It'd be an engineering nightmare to fit the JX1 air con unit to this engine,it'll cause headaches with the turbo air intake and alignment of pulleys and belts.Forget the idea.
4.A JB1 is as tight as the old JX1.Get the vehicle up as high as safely possible, use a hoist and engine crane if you can get access to them.
5.The JX1 oil pressure sender is too fat to go straight in the JB1 location without an extension and then its a tight fit beside the engine mount.
6.I wouldn't touch the wiring as per the download, unless you know what your doing it'll create problem if you have to get an auto electrician in.
7.There's no need to relocate the feul filter and power steering reservoir brackets.there's plenty of room.
8.My Jackaroo power steering hose plumbed up to the JB1 power steering unit fine,I'd suggest you check it before you do as I did and buy the one of the donor vehicle. You may not need it.
I hope this helps,
cheers

Hi all,
Dodgyjack, thanks for sharing. Between a few people having different experiences this process can only get better!
Didn't quite understand what you did with the bolts, but I purposely went to that trouble with the drilling and tapping from an engineering standpoint, because that effectively bolts the gearbox directly to the engine which is never gonna go anywhere and provides the original strength that came with the 4JX1. If the engine is bolted to the alloy spacer, then the alloy spacer to the gearbox, this relies on the alloy spacer for strength, and I wasn't comfortable with that.
Hope you get a good run out of your machine.
By the way - anyone who's interested, I'm selling mine due to growing family - yes that's right, 7 seats is not enough! I've placed an add under 'Australia-sell your 4x4'.
