EGT gauge?

Postby wbski007 » Sun Nov 08, 2009 1:15 pm

I'm looking at an EGT gauge on ebay, the make is Greddy, its a nice used one complete with all wireing and probe, but its in C, I'm used to F, red line starts at 900C ends at 1200C, but the f ones I was looking at are the same, red line at 900F and ends at 1200F, how can this be???? My question is how can they both red line at 1200 degrees, when C and F degrees are differant, I must be missing something :? :? and I think its my gray matter
I live in my own little world, but its OK they know me here.

1oooC sounds like the point that the exhaust manifold starts dripping onto the ground. If your engine had an alloy head the alloy would be about to boil and not working very well by then.
Even 600C is high

the gauge your talking about (made by greddy) are a performance gauge built for high out put engines such as rotary's whitch runn crazy hot exhaust temp's. on my RX7 Drag car ive managed to melt the stainless steel packing in resonators/mufflers when running fullboost/antilag/nitrous ect ive seen exhaust temps of close to 900c thats when a gauge like that one with high redline points are needed

that antilag is a terrible device. Ive run into it when helping a rally as a radio car. I thought the first vehicle along the road had crashed just round the corner from the noise but it kept crashing and bashing and rattling until it sped past. I think it works by squirting raw fuel into the hot exhaust to keep the turbo spinning. ie one great big continuous backfire

the pistons in an Isuzu diesel are aluminum, rite? Aluminum starts to melt at 1300 degrees fahreinheit, thats why a fahrenhiet EGT starts red lining at 900 degrees F and goes too 1200 degrees F, so you sould'nt go over 1200 degrees, if you do those pistons start to get a little on the soft side, which as we all know is a NO NO :o my question still is how can a celsius EGT gauge have the same readings :? :?

Sounds like the "danger zone" is very specific to what application you're using the gauge for.

So you'll need to know the safe maximum temperature for your car/truck and use that as "redline".
Maybe you'll be lucky enough to find a gauge that conisides with this.

Maybe having the same markings (e.g. 900-1200) and just changing the symbol and sensor/probe makes manufacture cheaper.

I think I would be scared of the readings on that guage if I had one. Pulled a Nissan patrol out of Windy bay the other weekend. (another amateur that had just bought the wagon and knew nothing of local conditions) Soft wet gravely sand and he was afraid of the waves so turned up the beech far to early. Basicaly pulled him sideways along the beach 400 meters in low second at full noise which took a full 5 minutes. Water temp climbed through half the guage in that time and there was a few unusual smells.
Nissan Patrols make heavy towing when they drag there diffs in the sand

6 of us went round for a shiney trip.(ccvc a Mu, my bighorn, a Prado a Cherokee,2 Pajeros)It turned into a recovery exercise with 8 willing volunteers from the public. Our only failure was a Pajero but that was only a flat tyre. I dont think anyone took photos
