Fuel timing adjustment - seized pump

Postby MU31TD » Fri Jan 08, 2010 8:08 pm

It is belt 3.1 TD isuzu MU

the engine works not so smooth lacks power and knocks a bit. I wanted to try and adjust timing a bit.

After I loosened three bolts that hold the pump in place I couldn't turn the pump at all. It seized rock solid to the mount and won't move. I've tried WD40 and some other penetrating lubes and still no movement...?!

I thought there should be some sort of adjustment bolt to adjust timing but can't figure out which one is it. Am I missing something?

Did you loosen the bracket under the pump?

Thanks. I got the bracket now. I can turn the pump now but only clockwise from where it was, if look from the front of the car. It is slightly better and smoother now, but I need to advance it a bit more but the pump wont turn any further. I can't get it anywhere near knock.

Also which screw is it for fuel amount adjustment? I couldn't figure out which one.

That's my pump:

Couldn't be a tooth, I've checked and re-checked when changed the belt. I think it could be the fuel lines to the injectors from the pump in the way. I'll try to loosen them next time.

So which one is the fuel amount adjusting nut?

This is going to end in ....fail. Over fuel and hole a piston! The only way to adjust this is with a dial gauge and a VE pump timing tool. There is no way you can do it acccurately enough by hand??

Get it to a diesel expert before you destroy the engine.

Where there's a will, there is a way. I'm not going to argue if it can or can not be done... If one person can't do it right, doesn't mean no one else can. I'll try to put on dyno at my mate's garage. A printed graph should clear all doubts. Only waiting for the bloody filter. Stupid courier had wrong address or lost it or something.
BTW car goes hard as it should now. And fuel consumption improved as well. I hardly touch accelerator to drive.

Currently I set boost at almost 1 Bar ~ 13.5 psi. Boost spikes to almost 1.1 bar. Might wind down a notch.

Still no luck with Dyno. I'll try maybe push it in this weekend.

I spoke to couple mechanics about the issue and also suggested a tune. I've tried Berrima Diesel and a Local diesel mechanic in Redfern and couple other shops in Sydney and as soon as they see or hear "Isuzu MU", nobody wants to touch the car.

Just wondering if anybody knows a diesel tuning mechanic who does MU's?

Just recently picked up my MU from GEMINI Diesel at Carlton. They found a fault in fuel filter cap. It was sipping air and was easily fixed with a new one.
I can tell what a difference it made is enormous.

Timing was spot on to factory setting, they said, but they adjusted it a bit (advanced) to compensate for more fuel. Mixture was good too.

As he explained injectors are set to a duty cycle. Too much fuel would not over-fuel the cylinder but rather damage the pump and injectors as more fuel would be pushed, the injector and will only let marginally more fuel into the cylinder. The rest of the fuel will be directed to return line. The symptom is knocking injector noise.

I wound down boost controller a bit and it bounces of 1bar at the top. I get wheel slip on round-abouts, and still get 9L/100km on highway (Volvo stile driving).

This car is mental!
