I have had the same problem changed gasket yesterday its not as bad a job to do as i thought it would be. There is a few things to remove to get the manifold off and the gasket was totaly shot so i put new one in with a bit of high temp gasket goo just to be safe.

Hi There,

I was just wondering what the purpose for a catch can is or the reason for it?

Cheers

Stolen from wiki
An oil catch can is used where excessive blow-by (leakage past the piston rings) of air and fuel vapor occurs. This creates a positive pressure in the crankcase. Engine manufactures have placed a valve on the engine block which releases this pressure. This valve is known as a PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve. During engine operation, blow-by gases, as well as oil mist from the rotating components of the engine, pass through the PCV valve and are routed back into the intake for the engine to burn off. However, some of the oil mist and other products settle along the engine intake and over time form a "gunk." The oil catch can collects the oil mist and condenses the fuel vapors while allowing "cleaner" gases to be passed back into the intake. Typically the blow-by gasses are passed through a wire mesh, which give the vapor droplets something to adhere to.

Hi,

I'm thinking of building the can as well, but what is the purpose of the check valve? If the oil is to be drained back to the sump.

The check valve is so the oil from the sump is not pushed up into the can

Hi All

I'm in need of a new intake gasket for a 4jb1-T (Mu). Does anyone know where to get one in Australia? I've checked ebay and can't seem to find anything there.

Can I go to a store like Repco and expect them to have one behind the counter?

what motor was this on steve?
steveNZ wrote:Here is some pics of DIY oil catch i have just installed

basically made from a drinking flask, domestic plumbing fittings and stainless steel wool

the catch was fairly simple but the one way valve took a little more time to refine

thanks to pig75 :D for the idea to use a ball bearing i was able to achieve this

catch can 006 (Small).jpg

catch can 007 (Small).jpg

The bearing needs to be about 1 to 2 mm smaller than the fitting you are placing it in if its to big the oil wont drain past if its to small it wont close i used a washer to make a seat for bearing to stop at
first tried the none return valve in a vertical position but pressure from sump was not enough to cause valve to close
using valve in horizontal position worked perfectly

catch can 016 (Small).jpg

catch can 014 (Small).jpg

Managed to do hole thing for $20 as had most fittings already lying around

the T connection into dip stick is only temp at the moment am having one welded on next week

hope this is helpful to anyone looking to build there own and thanks again to pig75 for the inspiration with none return valve

regards

steve

post edit 02.08.2010 this catch design was to small and the inlet pipe was to close to the bottom of catch can
