supercharger on 3.1 mu

Postby stardog » Fri Jan 22, 2010 6:39 am

Has any one ever fitted a supercharger on a 3.1 mu instead of the turbo and if there is any gain in performance over the turbo.

i think holden means the pics for the thread in the link. I know a bloke who put the super charger off a D9 bully onto a diesel v8 with turbo. Last i heard he still wasn't happy and was plumbing in butane injectors for a bit more kick

Theres been a couple of 4jb1s supercharged. Not sure if any real gain over a well set up turbo. If you try and boost beyond 15 psi by either method you are asking for trouble. The 4jg2 runs hot already and is known to crack heads. It already has very good torque and power

yes i agree the 3.1 turbo has plenty of grunt as it is and even better since i installed the intercooler on it. Im the guy who bought missy mu's black mu and reckon what a tough little 4x4 they are. next things going on it is a snorkel and a 12000 LB winch. already made up a 6mm steel bash plate for the front diff and sump protection.
I thought i would ask about the supercharger just to see if anybody has ever done it and what the results was. i wont be swapping over the turbo to supercharger.
I haven't had a chance to get out bush yet but will soon either up to barrington tops or down the south coast for a run up in to the mountians. Just got to get the time off work to do it which looks like easter long weekend so i will wait till then thanks for everybodys replys on this topic. cheers stardog

I agree with the above. More boost (from a turbo, 15psi) more fuel and advanced timing. Definately intercool. Need 2.5" exhaust, this helps keep the engine cool.
If your 4jg2 has an electronic controlled fuel pump you will need to find someone , ie a diesel pump repair, modification shop, to modify the governer on the fuel pump. I would suggest looking for someone who modifies Nissan TD42 pumps for the winch challenge guys.
If you have a mechanical controlled fuel pump most competent diesel mechanics can do it, or you can do it yourself if you are confident enough.
Remember the 4jg2 hates getting hot. It will punish you big time if you get it too hot, says the voice of experience, cracking heads and liners. More fuel, more boost equals more heat so keep an eye on the temp gauge.

As an aside, one of my mates is one of the go to guys for Nissan TD42 engines/pumps and top three winch challenge competitor here in NZ. He experimented with superchatging a Nissan TD42 a few years ago and gave up and went back to a turbo setup.
