lift on mu

Postby mudmud » Wed Apr 17, 2013 7:47 pm

Hi im getting stuck way to much in my mu and have decided I need to beef her up a bit i want decent sized tyres and lift but am unsure who do go to and what to do. Im in auckland, suspension lift or body lift, what are the precedures. Will probably get someone to do it but I really want someone who has done it before to give me proper idvice. Looking at 50mm only because it sounds like you dont have to extend or alterate anything for that height. If I could be put onto a reliable crowd who does this please let me know am keen to get out in the mud. Cheers

hi you can get your rear leaves reset, or get longer shackles, (longer shackles need certing), body lift is bit harder than suspension lift and also needs certing, front just wind the torsion bars up, dont know anyone in auks to help you, there a guy on trademe sells longer shackles

This link is what's needed for a body lift http://www.clubisuzu.com/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=71 not mentioned is that your bumper/ bullbar mounts will need modifying or there will be a gap between it and the grill
Torsion bar adjust you can do yourself with a decent socket set, jack and tape measure Just have a search on here and you will get all the info you need
For the rear you could also replace springs with new ones with a lift remembering that your old ones probably have sagged an inch or so depending on age Not a difficult job Again have a look on here

If you do go for body lift, kits are on trademe. Sounds like you just want and need a sus lift though.
New rear springs for 50mm over stock are easy to get. Will be several places in Auckland that make them. Or you can try Archers in Rotorua, I think they have an Auckland branch anyway.
Could wander in to your local Autolign or stocks for info. But shop around, you will get much cheaper from other places

I think we have made a boo boo (was going to use stronger language but I have to set an example :D ) with this thread and missed the obvious question What tyres are you running Mudmud?

32s should fit with nothing else 33s might fit but you risk rubbing if the offset is wrong. Are you sure its bigger tyres you need and not just better tyres. HT and AT tyres have there limits. If fitting muds though then a 265/75/16 will go on your current rims and be just short of a 32. Your suspension will almost certainly of sagged from new so even restoring original hight will give a usefull gain but if doing that Its not costing much more to get 50mm lift into the springs. When you measure it it will measure more like 80.
How long have you been 4wding. I always advise not to spend non essential money on a truck untill they are sure its the right thing to do. If you spend 500 to 1000 updating the suspension then decide 4wding is not for you you wave byebye to most of that money
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

seems eveyones mu's are different i have 31/10.5/15 on a mu and dont rub, have 32/11.5/15 on same rims they rub, and my 33/10.5 silverstones dont fit at all (rub everywhere), like geeves said work out what you want out of your truck and how much you want to spend

How did OP's lift go?

I am thinking about lifting as well so can bring it to woodhill for some bumpy ride. Wanting to go for a 2 inch lift. Initially was looking at the $160 trademe kit but not mechanically minded so rather have someone doing a proper job.

Called Motortech in North Shore and they quoted me $700 lift plus a $500-$600 for a cert (which is strange cuz I thought 2 inch lift does not need cert?). The other suspension shop I called quoted me $700 all up. Anyone who knows good mechanics who can do this on the shore in Auckland please let me know :)

Also for those who have done this mode does the lift affect your car's dynamic a lot? Bring safety minded I would want to have peace of mind that the lift will not cause too much rolling / wobbling cornering at high speed. Would still use this car 80% of time for commute.

Thanks

2 inch spring and torsion bar adjust would be the cheapest and easiest by far, springs around 200 for a pair, shocks if you really wanted, and no cert needed, body lift is cheap but needs a cert to be legal and lots of labour to fit

most leaves are 40mm lift off the shelf, 4wd bits have them in stock in auckland, or archers springs and gets your factory leaves reset
