winch for 94 mu

Hi to every one i was wondering what is the best size winch to fit to my 94 mu it has a ARB bullbar for a winch i was going to fit a tigerz 12000 lb with rope they sell for around $800- $900 .A mate said you dont need such a big winch on it and get a 8000lb winch the mu only 1800 klg's. the only reason i want the rope is to cut back on the weight on the front.just wondering what other people have on their mu's.

I have an ARB winch bar on my 91 Mu. In this I mounted a 9500 lb low mount winch. I wanted to put a 15000 lb winch in but was told that it would not physicaly fit in the gap. I would say measure up the winches you are looking at and see if they fit. 9500 lb is about 4 tonne so thats good pulling power. But if your stuck up to the chassis rails in thick mud you will love the extra power of 12000 or even 15000 lb winch.

I have wire rope on mine but want to change to one of the rope brands mainly for saftey. I have been told to watch out for the rope melting on the drum on some winches.

Dynamica etc looses a lot of strength at around 70C Most low mount winches have the brake mounted inside the drum and will get that hot if you use the winch to lower your wagon down a hill or power the cable out any distance. A couple of the brand name winches have a cone brake which is outside the drum which overcomes this but you pay 3 times as much for the winch. I also believe there is a brand of winch rope that has the first 5 meters made of a different rope to also overcome this.
Im useing steel as this came with the winch and Im a cheapskate. I also got a very cheap spare new cable on trademe

If you look tigers11 has a 9000lb winch with rope on it.

They look like a top winch with the cone clutch and 2 speed as well haven't seen any bad reports about tigerz winches so far might get one.

There is one thing you want to look out for in the winch you finally get. Its not a major hassel but it can be a pain at times.

Have a look to see if you can rotate the clutch housing a quarter turn before you install the winch into the ARB bar.
I say this because the winch I have has the clutch housing bolts hidden internally. The hole thing gotta be pulled apart to do it. I never bothered so the clutch handle is sticking out the back and is a bit harder to get at rather than facing down where is should be.

Like I say its no biggie but can frustrate you now and then.
