Thermostat housing question

Postby mauser9698 » Thu Apr 17, 2014 7:27 am

I have a corroded heater return pipe on the lower thermostat housing which emptied my cooling system resulting in a overheat which was combated very quickly my question is are they replaceable or do I have to buy a whole new thermostat housing.

It might be originally replaceable but with that much corrosion I bet it wont come out any more Also a complete replacement will solve corrosion issues later on. Plenty at wreckers

I got my wagon back together today after the cooling system failure got it started but it would not idle properly last thursday when I started it up before dismantling the thermostat housing from the cylinder head it also ran very rough, but todays episode it would only idle very roughly with the small hose disconnected from the air filter housing when you put it back on it would kill the engine, I also found beads of water on the dipstick and what smelt like exhaust fumes coming out of the radiator and it was blowing water back out of it while it was roughly running aswell. To me it almost seemed like it had not enough compression to run properly also the engine would not rev when you put your foot on the accelerator. Would this indicate cracked head as well as blown head gasket as I am pretty sure head gasket is toast.

symptoms of cracked head and blown head gasket are the same. Cant tell if the heads cracked till you open it up. In saying that though the symptoms sound quite severe so I would be expecting to replace the head

The idle issue got sorted I had stupidly forgot to put the air filter back up the right way so it idles fine now but is blowing water out of the dipstick hole so might have to send it to the mechanic to pull the head off and do the gasket as I am not properly equipped for removing heads or resetting timing if I accidentally put it out.

It is the 3.1 diesel? If so no worries about timing as the cam is in the block. You do need to torque correctly which requires torquing to a set value then turning an angle in 2 steps. I would do it and Im not a mechanic but would buy a better torque wrench than I have now and an angle gauge so $200 in tools just to start. A gasket set is about 150 and the head I did on the wizard was 1600 but all the precombution chambers etc have to be swapped over. If you get a garage to do it and the heads shot you are looking 2K plus for the job.
Whats your turbo like? If it has a whistle on shut down expect to spend another 1100 in the not too distant future.
Sometimes you have to be pragmatic when considering big repairs on old trucks.
When I did the turbo and head on the wizard I got trapped as we didnt know about the head crack as it hadnt started to leak and only found it because the head had to be removed to remove broken studs. Even then the mechanic wasnt expecting a crack test to find anything. But it did. Car already in bits new turbo bought and paid for Choice of tow car to wreckers or finish repair. 4500 on a car I bought for 4000. If I sold it tomorrow I would hope for 4000 tops

it is the 3.1 diesel also thinking about getting the turbo taken out when it does start having issues, it does not whistle on shutdown or anything so that is a bit off my mind. this was the first overheat I had but not sure if it had been overheated under the previous owner as that cooling system was pretty neglected and dirty.

@Geeves when you say you have to angle in two steps what do you mean by that, I have been thinking about it and maybe I should just have a go at it myself to save on the labour costs obviously this job is not a case of pull the head clean everything up as well as getting the head planed (if it is not cracked) then putting the new gasket in and then torque everything up. is there any way on telling if head is warped from the overheat, I just want to try and keep this as simple as possible without any extra headaches.

Just an update since I started this thread I did start to dismatle the engine to get the head off but with only having one day off from work per week I wasn't getting enough time to sort it out so ended up sending to the mechanic last week at the same time I bought a complete head gasket set from Isuzu parts specialist ($130 for complete set) and ended up buying a new aftermarket head on trademe from NZ diesel parts ($480 bare head) in anticipation of it being shagged and got the report yesterday that the head was off and there was that many cracks in it that the mechanic lost count but everything else on the block etc looked fine so the wagon will be back on the road next week with a brand new head.
