Noisy belt

Postby 96IsuzuBighornNZ » Sat Oct 03, 2015 11:24 am

My question is about a 1996 Izuzu Bighorn (4jg2T) Okay so I started off with a bit of a noisy belt, I tightened up the tensioner bolt how I was shown to, after a little while the squeaking started again so I tightened the bolt again. After a couple of times of doing this the bolt sheared off. Stupid I know. My question is, where should I start to get this thing apart and replace the bolt and tighten it properly, the belt isn't that old, I had a complete engine rebuild about 8 months ago. The belt I am talking about is the fan belt. Any help much appreciated.

3 fan belts. 2 go to the aircon and power steer the 3rd to the waterpump fan and alternator
to adjust the 2 power steer belts loosen the power steer bracket by the 2 14mm bolts on the front plus the 12mm nut on the back of the power steer pump (well hidden) then use the 14mm bolt that runs across the front of the head to adjust
To adjust the alternator belt it is easier with the battery out Loosen the bolt on the bottom of the alternator and the bolt in the ark at the top. If yours has the adjusting bolt at the end of the ark use this to adjust the belt if not use a tyre lever or similar to lever the alternator outwards while tightening the top ark bolt. Tighten all bolts
To remove the belts loosen then lift them off the pulleys and over the fan

there are 3 different length alt belts depending what water pump pulley you have, id say the 1 on it is to long and adjuster ran out then broke the bolt, its very common, you can either take radiator out or a/c pump off to get to it

Also different belt makers use the same part numbers but measure the belts differently. Ive had to deal with 2 belts like that. My old wagon the belts had the same number but the new one was 20mm longer and the Wizard had a loose belt when I bought it for the same reason

Hey thanks everyone, yea it is the one to the alternator causing the problem. By the sounds of it I think the bolt that has broken off is the one in the arc at the top? Is there a possibility of still tightening the belt with that bolt broken or do I really need to get that bolt out and replace it?

That bot goes through a bracket which is clamped by another bolt to the arc. If you didnt undo the clamp bolt it might be why the other one broke. You should be able to do the tyre lever trick but its better to fix properly. you can get at all of it with the battery out and a few swear words

I snapped the Alternator adjustment bolt the other week.
Tried several places in Darwin with no luck.
Would isuzu or holden still sell them?

Also the oil return hose (alternator to sump) is abit old & perished,
Cait seem to find a replacement aswell.

theres nothing special about the bolt as long as you can get the old one out
Hose is just oil resistant hose

Went to 2 of the biggest bolt supply shops in Darwin they didnt have 1.
what they had was the right length, but not enough thread :(

I bought half a metre of oil resistant hose, hopefully it wont hang too low for the line of fire .

So this tire lever trick, which I might have to do just for the short term, which bolts do I have to undo? I've had a bit of a go at it but it's hard to actually get a good look at the thing and understand how it works/which bits do what etc. Anyone know where I can see I diagram or a good pic etc?
