4JX1 Water in Oil

Postby 918cc » Thu May 16, 2024 2:52 pm

Just replaced the turbo on my 99 Isuzu Wizard 3.0 TD 4JX1. Done two days of 500k trips so 1000ks and water in oil and radiator bubbles when refilled. Have I done something wrong installing the turbo or is it the dreaded injector sleeve washers? Hopefully not a head gasket issue. Hard to start and today was almost like it was hydro-locked and wouldn't turn over, then chucked heaps out the exhaust when it started. Love the whole package, had it for 7 years and can do most repairs myself, just a bit weak (lack of strength) after breaking both shoulders last year. Not bad for a 72-year-old though! The turbo I bought off aliexpress was an RF5 but the face had the boost pipe facing away so had to rotate it, drill and tap it in to screw it in place. (Dropped the air compressor down to make room and used a right-angled drill adapter). What do you think guys, do the injector sleeve washers and injector O-Rings or is there another gremlin in there somewhere.

Water in oil could be bad turbo bad oil cooler bad injectors or bad head gasket
Radiator bubbles could be radiator settling after the turbo change or head gasket
I think we both know the most likely answer

Will I get away with laying aside the manifold and turbo complete or is it turbo off first to remove the head. Doing a cam belt while I'm there as well as injector and sleeve seals, waterpump and various gaskets, seals and belts.

Just re read this. New turbo from aliexpreess. Hope its not the cause after this long. Also hope water hasnt been sitting in the bores. A lot of china turbos do not have water jackets but quality control is always hit and miss. Good turbos are as good as genuine bad you dont want. Still the most common cause of oil and water mixing in a 4jx1 is the injector sleeves/orings. Have they had all the upgrades done. Heads do crack so could be a cause Bubbling water is not a good sign
