Rodeo 4JH1 - CEL/Fixed RPM’s/TPS

Postby DanzS » Wed Jan 15, 2025 8:00 am

Hi all,
First time here, hoping I can get some advice on my 2004 4Jh1 Rodeo

I have been having an ongoing issue for some time that I can’t seem to figure out with the limited knowledge and tools I have.
The problem is that the engine will rev up to 1100/1200 rpm and the CEL light will come on. At this time there is no response to the accelerator at all. I have a cheap scan tool but doesn’t display any DTC’s either when light is on or stored.

Restarting the engine will, more often than not, clear the light and idle returns to normal again. The issue reappears again randomly, sometimes straight away or other times after being driven for a short distance.
I have cleaned the MAF sensor and the EGR solenoid gauze is clear. EGR valve is clean.
Thinking it was the TPS I swapped it out for another from a spare throttle body I had. The voltage increase was good, although had to reduce the starting position down to .3v to get the idle correct, oddly on the scan tool the starting % of TPS shows as 33% and with only a small depression of the accelerator it jumps to 100%. Tried an OEM TPS, this now shows as starting at 0% but still jumps to 100% with only slight press of accelerator. Voltage range with multimeter is approx .3 to 3.9 at WOT.
Changing the TPS to either unit only seems to fix the issue for a short time still.

Scratching my head on what else to check and don’t understand the odd readings from the TPS. ECU was reset each time by disconnecting battery for 30mins.

Any advice is greatly appreciated (apologies for the novel)
Thanks,
Dan

I have as feeling its the ecu but sometimes its safger and easier to let the experts look at it. The possible parts are all expensive so going to the dealer may save some money
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

Thank you geeves, I think you might be right. Was trying to avoid taking into the garage as it’s a fair way off but might be the only solution.
Cheers
