Top Dead Center.

Postby muzila » Mon Mar 22, 2010 7:16 pm

I have my 2.8lt Mu in bits at the moment but need to set the motor to TDC so I can change cam belt and pull diesel pump out.

Can some one please tell me how to work out the best way to set the motor. I no it is piston 1 and I have to get it on compresion stroke. But thats all. How do I know the differance between compresion and exhaust stroke?

Thanks for any help.

Loosen all the tappets so you dont get valve kiss. Then turn each pulley in turn till you line it up with the 10mm bolt hole in the block and lock them in place with the 10mm bolts.
The only difference between the compression and exhaust stroke is the location of the cam and pump
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

Can't you take out the injector from #1 cyl and put your finger over the hole and when the piston comes up to the top the compression will push your finger away, that's TDC, NO???, that's the way I do it on petrol engines.

id go the glow plugs, wooden skewer down the hole, when it comes right up thats where it is,
and at least if u lsoe the wooden skewer down the hole it will burn up and hopefully not destroy anything.. unlike say a screwdriver

that gives you top, but not neccesarily top dead centre, using that technique with the tappet cover off you would have the cylinder at top with both the exhaust and inlet valve closed - old school ford motors at least, not overly sure how things work with injectors, but if at top and exhaust valve closed it would have to be tdc

When you lock the cam shaft and pump with the 8mm bolts and the crank markings will be at zero it will be at TDC.
