reviving the bighorn

Postby JWhat » Wed Nov 12, 2014 5:12 pm

Thought I would start a new thread as my other 1 is regarding finding my oil leaks.

So purchased the bighorn last week. Pretty tidy condition overall but owned by an elderly chap for many years its lacking a bit of power and probably needs a good service/ blowout/ tune.

Its an auto unfortunately, but will satisfy for now.
I have just fitted a boost gauge from the hose above turbo at the intercooler that goes to top of injector pump, I'm getting a solid 10psi through the whole rev range, which is good for standard so I've read, problem is the motor is sooo unresponsive before 2000rpm, real sluggish, what would be the first and next thing to do???

Removing egr system is definitely top of the list, will this help with take off?
I checked blow by, a little pressure coming from oil filler and only the faintest bit of smoke if you look hard.

Appreciate advice to get this thing breathing good again.

Will be doing oil fuel and air filters asap too

New air cleaner
look at front air intake and remove all pipework before the air cleaner housing (remember this makes it more vunerable in river crossings)
fit snorkel
fit 2.5 inch exhaust
ensure cold stat device not jamed
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

The bit of the cold start Im interested in is the flap in the exhaust Its purpose is to restrict exhaust flow keeping more heat in the engine. It only works when the coolant temp is below 5C and the switch on the dash is operated) it really robs power. They can fail in the closed or part closed position.
Other than that a standard 4jb1 is lucky to produce decent power much below 2k. Adjusting boost to 15psi also helps a lot but wont improve rev range. The 2.5 inch exhaust and improving intake flow help here.

Awesome bit of info there, will search that this weekend, I'm comparing this to my old d21 terrano, although that was manual. It had done 300ks, completely standard, and that was very responsive compared to this horn

Just done the hell service, seems quieter and smoother at idle, no real improvement in performance, maybe a bit more responsive, might wind fuel up a touch, this thing will not be getting thrashed, 40 km round trip to work, no hills,so should be good till I get bigger exhaust

Is this cold start butterfly behind the heat shield which sits just under the turbo?
What's the solenoid thing with the wire shaft going back to the manifold? Is this the actuator for this cold start butterfly?

This I found off the net but same as mine, that valve directly below turbo, has the hose coming from above turbo then has that pin/shaft, only a couple mm in diameter going back to the exhaust??? Us this the cold start valve?

After doing oil change and all filters there is a considerable more amount of white smoke on cold start up, a big cloud, and then for the first 5 mins of cold running...

Change the clamps on the fuel filter to worm type hose clamps, Im guessing you undid them to change the fuel filter? Possible it could be sucking air

Hoses and clamp look good.

Turned fuel up today, barely any smoke under load, the faintest haze only.

Made a good improvement throughout and take off from stand still no longer painfully slow

Dont expect much power below 1800 Let it rev. I drove mine like that and the engine always came back begging for more.
