1991 MU heater fan not working

Postby moohh » Fri Jun 29, 2012 9:22 am

g'day,

my name is Steve an I am new to this forum, just bought a 1991 MU for very cheap the other day and am in the process to figure everything out and try to repair what is not working. the heater fan is not working, I checked all the fuses, they are all good. before I start to dismantle the whole dash board I thought I better ask here first, maybe it is a common problem and easy to fix. who can help ?

cheers,
steve

Check the fan motor is not seized and the speed resistor is intact.

managed to bring the fan to live again (fan motor connector was highly oxidized) but there are still two problems, it only runs on full speed or not at all and after a short while it blows the A20 fuse. am I right if I assume the motor is buggered, pulls too much current ? (the bottom of the motor plus the four screws mounting the fan base to the fan case are all highly oxidized as well - screws just screwing into plastic but totally rusty, haven't seen that before) and the resistor pack is gone as well ? any other suggestions ? thank you

cheers,
steve

Pull it out and through it in the bin but first go to wreckers and get a fan and reistor out of mu or rodeo both the same.
You can buy new fans but the price for a new reistor be sitting down holden dealership wanted around $ 150 for 1 went to wreckers got 1 for $ 20.

got an offer for $30 for the fan motor and $25 for the resistors, seems to be reasonable.

talking about prices, a windows regulator for $50 sounds fair as well ? (I have no idea, I am new in the Isuzu business) ;)

cheers,

ok, got all my parts I needed to fix the fan and the power windows (bought the $50 windows regulator instead of the $145 one), even got a momo boss kit. anyway, after changing everything I now have the fan working in all four speeds, no strange noises anymore but the whole thing will not heat up. what the... ? I do have that switch in the dash board to speed heating up but there is no change, it will not heat. this morning I did run the engine in idle for at least 30min and then I went for a drive for at least 45min. nothing, the engine temperature goes barely up and there is no heating at all. any thoughts what I have to look into next ? yes there is enough water in the engine cooling system but even the water in the radiator gets barely warm, despite hot. is that normal for the 2.8 turbo that they do not really get hot and if then only after a very long time ? I can only compare it with a 3.0 Toyota Surf and that thing heats up nicely after 10min idle...

do you have a thermostat in the motor?

you know, that is a good question, it seems there is a new seal in where the thermostat is in, could be that the previous owner has removed it (like so many other things) :x I'll open it up tomorrow morning, I'll let you know, thanks

Check the cables from the heater control lever is connected behind the dash to the heater tap that opens and closes it they do break over time.

I dont think that the cable operates a tap in the Mu's. I think that it just controls a flap that alters the amount of air flow through the heater core.
Hot (or as hot as it gets) water is always flowing throught the heater core.
