F*****g grinding noise

Postby Murderface0151 » Mon Apr 18, 2011 3:26 pm

hey guys, got a question for yaz.

the other day i went out with a couple of friends to do some four wheel driving, mostly mud and water, little bit of hard gravel climbing.

on the way back i could hear a slight scraping noise, its got worse today when i just went to the servo for smokes. it sounds really loud because i can hear an echo, but not 100% sure as i'd need it driven past me to hear it properly.

but i was just wondering does anyone know what this is? it sounds like a stone on the brake disk, but ive had a look around and cant really see anything, although i havnt taken the wheels off to have a decent look (i dont have a jack handy as i just moved into a new place :( )

if someone could get back to me, i'd greatly appreciate it, its driving me nuts! :(

check for stones as above or a collapsed wheel bearing. i had the sound and i thought had stone stuck in brakes, however turned out front wheel bearing had collasped. need a hand mate let us know

willdo mate, thanks.

it seems to have stopped this evening after reversing for a bit lol, but i didnt hear anything fire out like you'd expect with a stone.

handling doesnt seem to be different as far as i can tell, and no other noises going over bumps or anything. was that the case with you Mudslinger? did you only know the bearing had collapsed once you got in there and had a look?

Thanks again

Wheel bearing kit is about 90 from BNT plus grease
Best thing thing to do is lift each wheel in turn and give it a spin. One will be making the noise. Also check free play. Dust on the brakes can cause this and there is little you can do about it till it goes away. A bearing should be more of a rumble and there will be lots of free play
If a garage does a bearing it should take 1.5 hours

I had similar sound and turned out to be collasped front wheel bearing, jack each wheel up and wiggle verticlly, and/or look at the brake pads for wear, i had a well worn rear right pad causing noise as well

theres absolutely no noise now, and not much play at all in the wheels. the noise stayed for a couple of days then went on its own.

was some pretty devilish mud i got into before the noise started though. maybe it was just crap from the mud inside the brakes or something... ehhh i dunno. its all so annoying -__- haha

Replaced said needle bearing about 2 1/2 months ago it wasnt to bad i had the hub assembly off to do the a arm bush The original was in pieces and I had only races to remove The inner tapped off the shaft ok and I welded an old bolt to the outer race and tapped it out However it is shagged already and the cv is poked I replaced it 2 years ago with a repco one and it started clicking within six months and now it crunches Am I better to just get a whole hub and cv assembly from the wrecker or just a cv and new bearings?

cv from wrecker Bearing is cheap enough new and the seal should be checked and replaced.
