common fault You can just replace the seal but watch out for rust on the input shaft which will prevent the seal taking and will mean either a rebuilt box or second hand replacement. Instructions on seal replacement by another member in the zip file

This is a useful post, my steering box has been leaking for some time but seems to be getting worse I think I'll have a go at this..
There does seem to be oil on the rod coming out of the steering wheel up top before it gets down to the box but the may be just oil coming off the turbo
Is there any other simple maintenance I should be doing when I'm there? could probably do with changing the oil I suppose

Cheers

just a quick question, when fitting the box back on to the vehicle does it need to be bled to get the steering fluid back around the system or does it do this automaticly?

cheers

it will bleed itself when you start the engine and turn the steering wheel, the oil can get air rated (it goes cloudy) just leave it to sit for awhile and the oil will come right again

There is a posess in the book where you lift both front wheels (not the way your thinking) turn the steering lock to lock then start engine and do this again but wheter it does much I dont know. I did this after doing a pump and the fluid level didnt change

ended up replacing the steering box but haven't had a chance to clean it all off yet to check if that ones leaking..
the steering feels a mile better.. got almost no play in the wheel now feels a lot tighter and haven't even tried tightening the adjuster screw..
when I pulled my old box of I had a go at operating it by hand and it doesn't feel smooth at all, it feels a bit notchy I was wondering if you can take them apart and replace the internals?
I haven't had a go at disassembling it yet as I've heard theres a lot going on in there and I want to get it right if I can refurbish it..
it would be good to have a spare one sitting there on standby!!..

Has anyone had a go at this themselves??

cheers.

It has been done but parts are nearly unobtainable and machineing is often required. My box got sent to Auckland the input shaft rebuilt by metal spraying etc and my credit card got 700 heavier over 6 years ago. Its starting to leak a little once again.

hmm.. sounds quite complex.. maybe I'll just have to rely on new seals and leak fix fluid to get me through future warrants...
I might take the old one apart anyway just out of curiosity.. see how many thing come 'pinging' out..

Hi,I know this will sound silly, but where can I get hold of a 4JD1-T power steering box? Took my Rodeo in to get new tyres fitted and when I got it back my power steering was leaking.Have tried the sop leak goo but Im talking seriouse leak. Not impressed with the tyre guys, and they claim " bad luck",which doesnt help my cause. So now Im after a power steering box.If anyone could point me in a general direction,I would be ever so happy.Thanks.

they are the same box right through the isuzu range from when they added power steer to when they went rack and pinion. Depending on where its leaking it might be an easy fix

Its leaking,or should I say get out the paddle its flowing ,from about half way, where it gets thicker...more so when I turn the wheels left(right hand drive)Could it be the seals? Then a full box wouldnt be necessary? What sort of seal kit would I need if that is the case ...sorry to hassle you with what must seem trivial questions, but I do appreciate you taking the time to help

the input shaft from the steering wheel is a common place for these to leak. The instruction in one of my earlier posts is how to fix

second most likly place for them to leak is the hose either at the joint or the hose itself.
If you do replace the box the later ones seem less likely to leak. Dont know why

Thank you.By further inspection, the problem is at the pitman arm,so Im assuming the seal was broken when the tyre pwr guys damaged it.....hmmm.The hoses seem to be intact and there is no fresh oil on them after degreasing, the flow is coming from around the arm.Ok,shall endevour to study more and proceed with seal replacement before moving to major surgery....does that sound right? Again thank you, much appreciated.

if its clean above the pitman are the seal advice given will be of no help. I cant see how the tyre guys damaged the bottom seal unless they were poking round with an electric drill. (they dont do steering box repairs?) That seal is a major. Pitman arm has to come off for starters and thats not pretty

Yeah we are pretty sure they got the young fellow to put it on the lift and he got it very badly wrong.....from no problems to suddenly pouring power steering fluid all the way home...Anyway,Ive been sourcing a new-ish box and am hitting my head into a wall at the same time, multi tasking at its best.Shall endevour to make this right.Again, thank you, youre a gem. ;)
