Manual Gearbox -4JB1 - 4JG2

Postby username » Wed Sep 23, 2009 8:09 pm

HI

Would be good to clear this up and maybe make it a sticky - I may end up buying both to find out if they bolt up or not -

Has anyone tried putting a gearbox from a 2.8 [4jb1] onto a 3.1 [4gj2]?

I am wanting to go from an auto 3.1 mu to a 3.1 manual RN106 HiLux.

I have just bought a box - shafts off a 2.8, but havent taken the engine out of the mu.

Cheers for any help advice or photos.

I did the opposite... bolted a 3.1 to a 2.8 gearbox....identical. Although the 3.1 flywheel is 10 mm larger in diameter, but the splines, studs and bolts are identical.

They both bolt up, the 3.1 manual gearbox is better because it has a flange on the output shaft instead of a slip yoke which makes modifing for other makes of driveshafts piss easy. My mate did a manual conversion on his 92 2.8 mu and he used a 3.1 gearbox from a 96 mu.
Here is the my 3.1 gearbox Image

I have a gearbox/driveshaft clutch line, an box has flange on output so by posted info 3.1 and a mint 3.1 engnie in my mu stil running,

Just need flywheel clutch pressure plate and im away.

Yes the cranks are the same.
Use the 3.1 clutch and flywheel....bigger and more clamping pressure with no noticable pedal pressure increase.

I ended up buying both boxes 2.8 and 3.1 and they were identical in bellhousing position to engine, adapter plates the same, even same as the auto 3.1.
I went with the 3.1 flywheel clutch pplate and starter.

Have took a whole bunch of photos of the project to date and will make a thread about it one day but its far fropm, finished - no lockers / on boiard air - cb radio yet.

Is the hilux RN106 box the same as a zu box with a removable bellhousing?

Yep the Hilux auto will have a removable bell and unlike the Isuzu, the manual also has a removable bell.

Does the same apply with the Auto boxes? 3.1 and 2.8 are interchangeable?
