Front hub needle roller

Investigating a horrible squeal in 4wd I found pretty much what I expected.

Anyway will round up the parts this week, but how do you install the needle roller? Manual says to just drive it n.
I assume it slips past the steel lip ok? As indicated by the screw driver:

Want to be sure before I bugger it trying to press it in, seems a bit of an ask for it get past that and pop into the slot behind

You have pushed you screwdriver through the seal. that has to come out. the lip is where the bearing rests against. its not hard to put in just be careful with it. The seal will give you more grief going in than the bearing. You will need a new seal BTW and it will look different than the old one.

Bearing is available aftermarket, (Cheaper) Seal is a Dealer only part.

I've removed the seal in those pics. I can't see what else can come out or how. The tip of the screw driver is where the bearing goes. How do you get the bearing past the lip?

Anyone know the size of the needle? I don't think mines a good sample for the bearing shop!

Does the metal part the seal sits into need to come out as well? Looks like that will be a challenge to get out in one piece

Holden can do the seal/deflector (it's sold as one piece) for about $25, currently nil stock in NZ stock due 27th Oct in a container so nothing available until next month!
A dealer is showing one in stock and I'm waiting to hear if it's available. Other wise the MU is off the road for a few weeks unless I can get the deflector off intact and find a seal to fit

Needle roller is p/n HK3016 standard off the shelf bearing.

the rear seal and deflector have been revised, i changed them in my bighorn to the new ones because i keeped wreaking the needle rollers, has been ok since, think i have some new ones in my parts box will have a look

Yea my bad.

Should of explained it a bit better. The needle bearing is a 1 piece unit. The lip you refer to is probably the inside of the bearing outer shell.

If I remember correctly I tapped my bearing shells out no problems.

Where you have the screw driver is part of the bearing. Easiest way to get it out is drive a small punch between the bearing and the housing till the shell collapses. new bearing goes in from the side your showing but its quite delicate. When Ive done mine Ive put a smear of grease on the outside then tapped in very gently using a socket of tthe same size as the bearing as a drift. take your time dont hit too hard.
The new style seal is magic compared to the old type. Only catch Rob forgot to mention is that the all metal ring that goes on the cv in place of the original is Tight. I had to warm the ring till just before it started to go blue before I had a hope of getting it on. Once installed there is actually pressure on the seal when you assemble

Can you clarify the bit about going on the cv? Is there more to it than the seal that goes in the back of the stub? You have to remove and replace the ring on the c/v itself as well?

The new seal is 2 pieces. Rubber part goes on the hub the metal only part goes on the cv

Oh fun.
So the new seal does away with the metal part in the back of the hub? That explains why Repco/BNT only list seals that are bigger than the one I pulled out

The hub part is metal and rubber The cv part is all metal. Take your chassis no to your local holden dealer and order the genuine seal. Its worth it.
I tried buying it via a local bearing shop but the pic they had against there part number was not optimistic to being the right one

Yeah I've got a genuine one coming. But I what I'm not sure about is the metal part. That has to come out to get the needle roller out from what I can see

the flat metal washer with 2 slots is a thrust bearing. Yours looks ok. Ive had one worn smooth and another completely disappear

No I'm talking about the metal part that holds the needle roller in, the lip in the pic I posted in my first post. That lip is part of the larger metal housing that the rubber seal was in.
It looks like it iwll be very hard to remove without damaging it.
Hopefully It'll all make more sense when I get the new bits in front of me

thats the shell of the bearing. One of mine even worn that lip away making it nearly impossible to get out.
