1996 UBS69 Bighorn Tyre+Wheel Questions

Postby Tbrinks » Sun Aug 29, 2021 3:11 pm

Me and my partner have purchased a '96 Biggy and after sorting some mechanical faults we are starting the journey of getting it ready to find some out of the way campsites. We are looking at upgrading the current stock rims and tyres however have heard many different conflicting stories on what will fit and what wont, so just trying to reach a consensus.

Questions are as follows:
1. Do 15" rims at 0 offset impact the rear brake calipers at all? I have heard horror stories of 15" rims not working overly well with these bighorns however have also had guys that have run them forever and had zero issues, however this was at -22 and therefore not close enough to warrant concern
2. With zero lift (apart from the front torsions being cranked to match the rear), do 32x11.5R15 (285/70R16) fit on the front without rubbing at full lock/under some minor flex (touring offroading)
3. What offset are guys running to ensure that the tread stays somewhat legal, i have the widebody flares. Doing the math, 0 offset should make 31x10.5R15(265/70R16) be legal, however guys have said that they are running 31s on -22 offset and its all good

Any insight or wisdom would be greatly appreciated thanks

Cheapest easiest way is to put 265/75/16 tyres on your standard rims which are 16/7j. This is the same diameter as a 32 and almost as wide. They fit well inside the guards so no issue at wof time. If you are not looking at serious 4wding you will have no issue with these rims if they are mags. Ive done very serious trips on factory mags no issue. There are factory steel isuzu rims on trademe but any large japanese 4wd rim will fit. 15 inch steel rims can fit but you have to be careful with offset but these days tyres are just as cheap for 16 inch rims. The loss of footprint at lower pressures is not enough to worry about.
You could also try a 285/75/16 which is a 33 but on standard suspension you might run into trouble. I theory they should be on an 8 inch wide rim but everyone runs them on a 7

Here is my 97 Bighorn with 32x11.5 R15's on stock old Pajero rims, they sit basically level with the outside of the factory flares, no issues with the tyres for a warrant.
Other things have been warrant issues tho! :D

Looking good! Thanks for the responses guys. Do the 32x11.5R15s or 265/75R16s fit on with stock suspension and no rubbing?

my swb was quite saggy when I bought it and fitted 265/75/16 tyres. No rub at all. It went up a little when I put lwb springs in but went up another 75mm when I put new Coby springs in. I had a choice of raised or extra raised if that was ever a choice.
