Anyone own a KB?

Postby spitsnrovers » Sun Jan 31, 2010 12:27 pm

I'm in Costa Rica with a '91 KB 4 door, 4X4 diesel. I see a lot of other models on this forum that I don't even redognize, but seems on one owns one like mine. Does anyone have a KB of similar vintage?

Mine has a diesel, but know that it is a replacement out of some other year. It has an exhaust brake on it, which no one seems to know anything about. I bought a Haynes manual on line - picked the one that said "for pickups, for diesels..."., but when the book arrived - no diesel coverage and was pretty useless. It says things like "remove the .....", but doesn't tell you how! The company nicely refunded my money, but I still don't have a manual that covers my model. Any recommendations?

The engine number and the first 5 digits in the chassis number will help
Unless its a modification the flap in the exhaust is not an exhaust brake. It is part of the cold weather warm up system. Probably not very useful where you live

This is registered as a KB1600, the VIN is JAATFS10HHM7100006. The engine is 150992, which I am sure is not original.
It definitely has an angine brake. Vacuum is stored in a small tank, a solenoid opens the vacuum line to operate the brake flap, which closes the exhaust between the manifold and the down pipe. Switches on the dash, clutch pedal and gas (diesel) pedal allow it to operate or not.

Sure sounds like a "big rig" going down some of these Costa Rican hills with the foot off the pedal!

Sounds the same as the TFS utes we have here but all the info I can find is for a gas engine not diesel. Quite often the diesel engines have something written on the pipe that goes from the turbo to the inlet that might help. Its most likely either 2200 or 2800 or 3100

most common diesel engine in USA is the C223 Do a look on google for a picture and see if its the same. The non turbo version of this engine lasts forever but is not very fast

Thanks CRIsuzu! I had seen a very early post of yours, but hadn't heard of you lately.

I checked the motor number, and it is only 150952 - which seems a small number for a motor. It is on a small raised casting right rear of the block. But there are no other digits on that casting. The previous owner did tell me it was a 4BJ1 motor, and somewhere in his ad said it was a 2.8 Litre. But the Registration shows 1600.

I'm still looking for a decent repair manual, Haynes or otherwise, in order to sort out wiring problems.
Keep in touch,

acctually the 4JB1 its under that casting, on the black part of the block, its a bigger number, anyway your kb used to be an 1600 those were used for rent a car several year ago, if im not wrong they used to came with A/C only not Power steering, and those were super slow rides.
make sure to download the manual that geeves told you its very informative and you can learn a lot with them!

:D WOW guys. I got it! With the help of my wife (I fix the truck - she fixes the computer) got the files downloaded and unzipped.

Now that is a repair manual! Now I can get some real work done.
Thanks for the help.
