Spacer Diff Drop

Postby iananita » Sun Mar 20, 2011 12:09 pm

When fitted Lokka recently, did simple diff drop but only able to get 14mm without any mods to the brackets or lower cross member. I first used M16 nuts as spacers but then got alloy spacers made. The small amount has made a slight difference to CV angles when suspension fully extended(Sorry, I did not get pics to compare). The mod itself is very simple could be done in an hour. Hardest part is getting the bolts undone. I purchased 4 high tensile bolts 20mm longer total cost $40.

I had these alloy spacers made(my brother works for Hills)

Passenger's side bracket just clears draglink at 14mm, driver's side has a lot more room could do 20mm spacer

Crossmember under diff does not need to be modified still some clearance here

I have been considering this with my wizard with 2" suspension lift, thought it was way beyond my capabilities but maybe not. Are there any drawbacks to this? and is the only benefit improved C.V. angles?

Are you breaking CV joints after lifting your suspension?

The lokka was the best mod because I now can take the tracks at walking speed not needing the right foot to get thru. This was a very simple mod, other than spanners only need a floor jack to support the weight of the diff when you let it down, do one side at a time. The mod will not get you any further off road but will lessen CV angles, hoping to lessen wear and tear.

43mm diameter, yes only 14mm which means I do not need to mod the lower crossmember or passenger side diff bracket to clear steering linkage.

so dropping the diff straightens out the cv's. thus allowing for tortions to be would up more correct? (possible tortion reindexing required) But does 14mm of drop allow for only 14mm raise after or more?

standard allows 50mm fairly safely so 14mm would allow 64mm intherory. By that ime you will run into bump steer issues unless you also do high steer. (no kits made for this)

ok cheers for the quick reply Geeves, so if im going to run into trouble f#$%^*g around with steering in the end i may as well drop the diff properly and modify steering / crossmember etc. Hmm i hate decisions

50mm suspension lift will allow 33 inch tyres with only an occasional rub. Bigger tyres than that will put excess strain on the cv joints and you will already have a vehicle that goes over most sane tracks.
