I would of said 4jb1 but they dont work that well with an auto. The power loss is too much. Switching to a manual transmission can be done but there are so many things that make it hard. Things like the clutch etc
4jg2 is still a good motor as well.
I have both

Hey guys. Myself and a mate are currently doing this conversion. The 4JX1 is out and we have found that the clutch needs replacing. These are ridiculously expensive and was wondering if its possible to leave clutch setup from 4JB1 on? does Jackaroo bellhousing bolt straight up to 4JB1? would i then not have to install the Aluminium spacer? Finally does anyone know if rodeo gearbox fits into Jackaroo.

I know this is an old post but any info would be great. Cheers.

Look through the links further up this thread. Its a bit of work.
One thing that can be done now is to swap to the 4jj1 or 4jh1. Bellhousings match so easier swap. These are a newer engine so more expensive but better power etc
