2wd to 4wd should work on the move but it doesnt take much to mess it up. It only works properly in a straight line and if all the tyres are the same size. The reality is if its working stopped that its not very often you need to change on the fly.
If you want to fix it the grinding noise will be coming from the front diff dog clutch assembly which isnt engaging correctly on the move.
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them
