The 4wd light is controlled by a switch on the diff. When you select 4wd a switch in the transfer case activates the 2 solenoids on the diff which allow vacuum to activate the clutch in the diff which activates the light switch. If the light is on the clutch in the diff is activated.
I had the opposite problem in my wizard but my answer was to rewire the solenoids so I could activate the diff separately to 4wd. It was meant to just test the electrics but I quickly realized how useful low range 2wd was when backing trailers so my temporary switch remained blue tacked to the dash for 4 years
My money is on a bad solinoid
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them
