Oil Leak - Intake Side of Engine.

Postby turnturn » Sat Jan 16, 2010 10:15 pm

FYI.
Today I was chasing, what I thought was, an oil leak that I had initially assumed was coming from the rocker cover somewhere.
I couldn't see in there very well because of Intercooler etc.
Turns out it was grunge from the intake manifold.
Manifold wasn't loose or anything. Gasket was very brittle while being removed though.
Today has shown me to not be in any hurry to remove your intake manifold. It's quite a time consuming process as quite a few other things need to be removed to get it off. Including the Injector piping.

I'm not sure about either. I haven't had it very long or done very many kilometres in it.
I bought it cheapish as a second car knowing it needed some work first.
I have ended up doing a lot more to it than initially anticipated.
It seemed to go alright (4JG2-T, manual). I'm used to the 4JB1-T.

I'd say your getting lots of oil into the intake somehow, does it smoke alot, I would think it does, by the amount of oil dripping out the intake, I'd say breather pipe or turbo seals ?? Can't be piston rings or valves, that would cause lots of oil seeping out the exhaust side, something that's not rite is causing all that oil getting in there, my guess would be, its sucking oil out of engine breather. Lets see what the other guys think, I could be wrong.

I have the 4JB1-T 2.8 and had the same sort of problem.
Faild a WOF and was told the fuel pump was leaking. After finally pulling the intake off and checking it, I found that my intake gasket was brittle and letting oil/fuel past it.

Ended up using gasket goo and that fixed the problem.
BTW the intake was bolted up tight before removal too.

Just somthing for you to look into.

I've got a new gasket and will refit the intake manifold after blocking off the EGR valve holes during the next week.
I think I'll also fit a catch bottle to the breather setup and go from there.
I have noticed that there is a definite thin oil film on the inside of most components of the intake system after the turbo. Is this normal? Or is it indicative of turbo seal failure?
From memory my 4JB1-T also had an oily film inside the intake system when I fitted the intercooler years ago. It's done over 300,000ks and doesn't use any oil.

gt the same leak on my 4jg2, has stopped now after putting a oil catch can in, the oil after the turbo and before is just from the breather system i think, mine hade a fair bit in there and was using oil, catch can fixes it.

There will always be some oil in there unless youve had a catch can from new. My 4jb1 has the same oil under the gasket as well but as its never dripped Ive never worried about it. It was there when I bought the car 14 years and 120000km ago

Thankyou for the pics, where do they plumb into and do you have a return line to the sump?

From memory the pipes from the injector pump to the injector have to come off.
It's more time consuming than challenging.

have just fitted oil catch to my 4jb1t had oil both before and after turbo and some traces of of blue smoke, only had the catch on 3 days now and already noticing a marked improvement inlet to turbo now much dryer and blue smoke seems to have cleared up now

next step is to plumb catch drain into dip stick with a one way valve so collected oil gets reused

sounds like the catch will help things

i need a catch can still too... mine still uses a little oil, has got better after changing the air filter :-)
wat size fittings are you guys running on yours?
and im guessing it easier to buy one with the in, out, drain and atmo fittings in it already

Generally we dont run the breather to atmosphere. In normal applications it is better to but if used off road its another place water can get in. We plumb it onto the intake at the same point it was fitted to before the catch can was fitted

Here is some pics of DIY oil catch i have just installed

basically made from a drinking flask, domestic plumbing fittings and stainless steel wool

the catch was fairly simple but the one way valve took a little more time to refine

thanks to pig75 :D for the idea to use a ball bearing i was able to achieve this

catch can 006 (Small).jpg

catch can 007 (Small).jpg

The bearing needs to be about 1 to 2 mm smaller than the fitting you are placing it in if its to big the oil wont drain past if its to small it wont close i used a washer to make a seat for bearing to stop at
first tried the none return valve in a vertical position but pressure from sump was not enough to cause valve to close
using valve in horizontal position worked perfectly

catch can 016 (Small).jpg

catch can 014 (Small).jpg

Managed to do hole thing for $20 as had most fittings already lying around

the T connection into dip stick is only temp at the moment am having one welded on next week

hope this is helpful to anyone looking to build there own and thanks again to pig75 for the inspiration with none return valve

regards

steve

post edit 02.08.2010 this catch design was to small and the inlet pipe was to close to the bottom of catch can

If you can find a broken 3.1 engine the dipstick tube is the same but already has a connection for the pipe

Good thinking i know a guy with one in a field still got block and dip stick intact will give him a call
if not have a spare pipe from blown 2.8 so will get T welded or braised on in future using a modified compression fitting from 12 mm aircon at the moment, was a bit of play in it so it took a bit of packing should be good for the short term

thanks for the info alan
